“Thank you for not leaving,” Toma said later that night. They were back in the room where Toma had woken Teak up that morning. Toma was drunk on whiskey. They could not get to a hospital that day and he lay tourniqueted on Teak’s bed. Teak, sober, leaned out the window and looked at the dark shipping containers and the Indian Ocean beyond, thinking about the kites he had seen. Fighting or playing.

“Hey,” said Toma from the bed. Teak turned from the window.

“The times, they are a-changing.”

Every time Toma spoke a rock lyric, his eyebrows, which were long and thin like the rest of him, rose up and down. It suddenly occurred to Teak that Toma was mocking him, somehow, with the lyrics. He turned back to the window.
